WHAT IS TRUTH?
Greetings church family!
Two men had an argument. To settle the matter, they went to a judge for arbitration. The plaintiff made his case. He was very eloquent and persuasive in his reasoning. When he finished, the judge nodded in approval and said, "That's right, that's right."
On hearing this, the defendant jumped up and said, "Wait a second, judge, you haven't even heard my side of the case yet." So the judge told the defendant to state his case. And he, too, was very persuasive and eloquent. When he finished, the judge said, "That's right, that's right."
When the clerk of court heard this, he jumped up and said, "Judge, they both can't be right." The judge looked at the clerk of court and said, "That's right, that's right."
In the above story, the judge seems to have no real basis for his conclusions other than whatever he just heard seems right to him.
Nowadays, there are all kinds of methods people use to reach the truth. Some say that reason is the ultimate path to truth. “If I can’t see it, hear it, smell it, taste it, touch it and test it, it can’t be true,” they say. Others lean on popular opinion to arrive at truth. If the majority believes it’s true, then it must be true, right? Still others depend on their feelings to decipher truth. Of course, if feelings are a good standard for decision-making, then you’ll never have to come up with a better defense than, “I believe it because it feels right.”
One day, approximately 2000 years ago, Jesus stood before a roman governor to be interrogated. Of all the questions Pilate presented to Jesus, arguably the most memorable one was “What is truth?” (John 18:38). Jesus made it be known to his disciples just hours before his meeting with Pilate, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6). Jesus came to let us know that truth is not an opinion or a feeling, nor can it be arrived at by reason alone. Truth is a person, and that person is Jesus Christ.
This Sabbath, as we look at the belt of truth and the sword of the Spirit, you are invited to take Jesus statement seriously. Jesus did not come to teach truth or show the truth as much as he came to reveal that HE is the truth! As you are daily bombarded with multiple versions of what truth supposedly is, will you take Jesus at his word? Jesus says that if you will do just that, “then you will know that truth, and the truth will set you free!” (John 8:32)
Be blessed with the truth that God is for you, God is with you, and God loves you!
