How This “Following Christ” Thing Works

I admit there are times when I have doubts and confusion about how this whole “following Christ” thing works. I don’t always know what to think about Jesus.

“You see that you can do nothing; look, the world has gone after him.” John 12:19

The Pharisees who said this were wrong. The world has not gone after Jesus. The world goes on. Some of us go after him and some of us do not.

Studying and preparing the messages in our current series: “The Radical Sayings of Jesus” is bringing up questions and thoughts at times I find to be complicating in my walk as a Christian.

I want to know and understand Jesus better, and I believe you do also.

The confession of two thousand years of church history challenge me and instruct me about the man who lived this “one solitary life.”

The author of the letter to the Colossians states: “He is the image of the invisible God.” Jesus said, “The Father and I are one….He who has seen me has seen the Father.” (St. John).

In Philippians 2, Paul quotes a hymn of the early church, which says of Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:6-11)

The message of these early Christians is as direct as it is wholehearted: if you want to know who God is and what God is all about just look at the life and ministry of Jesus. Jesus is the pattern. He is what the human race was designed to be, what you and I were designed to be. We are created in God’s image. He is God’s image.

Jesus Christ is our companion, guide, goal, standard. He calls us forward into fellowship and a caring, giving of ourselves. He helps us find the delight of forgetting those old petty and self-centered ways.

He is always just ahead of us, inviting us to catch up, as we do what we cannot help doing, as you and I together go after him.
