LIVING WATER
Dear Foothills Community Church Family,
It was a hot day--probably mid-to-late July when the temperature would be well over 100 degrees. The sun beat down on Jesus and his disciples as they hurried to make their way through Samaria as quickly as possible. They came to a well with a rock ledge built up above the ground in the typical manner of the Middle East. Jesus sat down on the ledge while the disciples went into the nearby town to buy lunch.
Jesus thought to himself: "If only I could have a drink of water!" At precisely that moment, the woman came along. It was an unusual time for a woman to come to the well alone. But this woman had specifically come when she expected no one else to be there and was trying to avoid any interaction.
In addition to her desire to hide, four invisible walls stood between them. A religious wall, a gender wall, a racial wall, and a moral wall. Yet, our Lord Jesus found a way through all of them. He found her, and then she found him!
Here's what we see in Jesus' treatment of the woman at the well:
- He broke custom to talk to her.
- He spent time with her.
- He knew her past but didn't hold it against her.
- He gently led her to a brand-new life.
Jesus saved the woman at the well. That morning she woke up with a heavy load of guilt, but by evening she was sharing the good news with everyone she knew! Only Jesus can quench the thirst in our hearts. The Living Water is free for the asking.
