Attributes of God

Dear Foothills Family and Friends,

What is your favorite attribute of God? Scripture tells us God is perfect love, perfect justice, perfect wisdom, perfect holiness, and so on. Everything about God is great, perfect and wonderful beyond imagination!

There are moments when we might cling to God's mercy as a drowning person clings to a life preserver. At other times, we are overwhelmed by a sense of God's majesty. Still other times, God's holiness exposes our sin and leads us to repentance. We often swim in the ocean of God's love. When evildoers get away with crimes, we find solace in the truth that God is just.

If I had to choose the one attribute of God that keeps my faith strong when all else around me seems to fall apart, it is the rock solid truth of the sovereignty of God. This means that God is in charge of all things at all times and in every situation. The sovereign God is the undisputed leader and Boss of the Universes—God knows what God is doing, and God is doing it all!

The Bible teaches the doctrine of God's sovereignty on almost every page. Here are a few examples:

Job 23:13 "But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he pleases."

Job 42:2 "I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted."

Psalm 115:3 "Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him." (Whenever I read this verse, I want to say, "Any questions?").

Romans 11:33-36 "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 'Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?' 'Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?' For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen."

Paul is pointing out no one could have foreseen how God would respond to human rebellion. This wonderful doxology comes at the end of Paul's declaration that the Gospel is God's answer to man's sin.

As we face the challenges that come with riding the roller coaster of life from day to day, isn't it great to know God is in charge of everything? We exercise faith by trusting God and waiting on God. God knows what he's doing, even when we don't have a clue!

How much do we see in advance? Very little. How much in life happens by chance? None of it. Who is behind the scenes working in it all? God.

How big is your God? Is he big enough for your problems? Is he big enough for your future? Is he big enough for your pain? Is he big enough for your fears? Is he big enough for whatever you are facing?

If your God isn't big enough, maybe it's time to trade up to the God of the Bible!

It's wonderful to be on the joyful walk together!

With love,

Duff
