Where Is Your Focus?
Greetings Foothills family!
I grew up during a time when many cars had hood ornaments. A hood ornament was a logo that stood vertically at the front of the hood of the car. It was the logo of the company that manufactured that model.
When I turned 16, my dad gave me driving lessons. He quickly discovered that I was not the fastest learner when it came to driving. One of the areas I really struggled was making a turn. I had the bad habit of overturning, and then having to correct the overturn to assure that I was in the correct lane after the turn.
During one of those lessons, my dad asked me, “Where are you looking when you make your turn?” I responded, “I’m looking at the hood ornament.” What my dad said next fixed my bad habit almost immediately. “When you make your turn, look to where you want to go, not to the hood ornament.” I did exactly what my dad said, and the overturning was gone instantly. Imagine that, changing my focus changed my dilemma.
This Sabbath, we will be looking at the lives of the apostles Andrew and Philip. In truth, we will really be studying how, through the lives of Andrew and Philip, Jesus teaches us about 2 words - focus and aware. What are the things in our walk with Christ that we are to be aware of? What are the things we should be focused on? When trials arise, are we aware of Jesus’ power but focused on the trial, or, are we aware of the trial but focused on the power of Jesus to bring us through the trial?
Songwriter Helen H. Lemmel points us in the right direction in this matter. You may be familiar with the lyrics of one of her beautiful hymns.
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of his glory and grace”
Remember church family, God is for you, God is with you, and God loves you!
